What is Scentwork?

Scentwork, also referred to as Nose Work, is an activity for dogs that mimics what working detection dogs do.  These working detection dogs are trained to sniff out specific odors.  A few examples include a police K9 trained to sniff out drugs or contraband, a military K9 trained to detect explosives, or a U.S. Department of Agriculture detector dog trained to inspect bags, cargo, and shipments at ports of entry to detect invasive species.

How will I benefit from doing Scentwork with my dog?

The collaborative nature of scentwork strengthens your relationship and bond with your dog.  This is because scentwork is a team activity wherein you rely on your dog's amazing sense of smell and your dog relies on your support and guidance.  You and your dog must also be able to clearly communicate with one another.  You will learn to better “read” your dog and to connect with your dog on a deeper level.  Scentwork is an investment in your relationship with your dog.

How will my dog benefit from Scentwork?

Puppies, adults, and senior dogs all benefit from scentwork! It provides mental stimulation and is a great low-impact way to burn energy.  It is physiologically demanding so can fulfill a dog’s need for exercise more than just physical activity alone.  Many dogs have a genetic need to “work” – that is, they have natural instincts and drives that need to be fulfilled and scentwork provides an outlet.  It can also build confidence and be a great way to address negative behavioral issues associated with boredom.

Can my dog do Scentwork?

Yes!  Puppies, dogs of all ages, and all breeds can do scentwork since it’s a natural activity all puppies and dogs already do.  Dogs naturally explore the world through their incredible sense of smell.

Can I do Scentwork if my dog is reactive, shy, or fearful around other dogs or in new environments?

Yes!  Scentwork can help build confidence in all dogs and can be especially beneficial in this regard for dogs that are shy or environmentally sensitive.  If your dog is reactive around other dogs, private lessons are offered and a great way to get started.

Is Scentwork the same as tracking?

No.  Scentwork and tracking are distinctly different activities/sports but dogs utilize their sense of smell and some of the same skills to do both.  Tracking traditionally involves the dog following a ground scent trail left by a human or animal.  Scentwork involves the dog searching for a specific target odor in different environments and settings.

What odors/scents will my dog be trained to find?

Dogs can be trained to detect any odor but for the sport of scentwork they will be trained to detect hidden odors of Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress.

How long will it take to train my dog?

Every dog is different but with consistent training, most dogs quickly understand the goal is to locate the target odor which will be Birch, Anise, Clove or Cypress.  Once your dog understands this is the goal, simple searches can be started.  The searches increase in complexity as your dog advances in proficiency and skill.

What training options do you offer?

Apex K9 offers private lessons (you have the option to share a one-hour private lesson with one person), group classes, and travel class.

Private lessons are ideal for introductory lessons to get your dog started, teams looking for individualized instruction, and targeted skill development.

Group and travel classes are arranged on a rolling basis so please email GoApexK9@gmail.com for availability.

What skills or experience do I need?

None.  People of all ages, including juniors, can participate in scentwork.  No special skills or prior experience is needed.

Do I need to compete or trial in Scentwork?

No.  Scentwork is an enriching activity that you can do to simply have fun with your dog and enhance your bond.   However, if you are interested in trialing there are multiple organizations that host events that you and your dog can participate in to earn titles.

Can I title my dog in Scentwork?

Yes.  You can earn titles through American Kennel Club (AKC) Scentwork trials that can be added to your dog’s AKC registration.  Dogs that are not eligible for registration with the AKC can still participate by registering through the AKC’s Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) or Canine Partners for mixed-breeds.

Is Scentwork expensive?

No.  Scentwork does not require the purchase of costly training equipment.

Do I need a large space or a yard to train Scentwork?

No.  Scentwork is an accessible activity and easy to train even if you live in an apartment.

Will Scentwork interfere with daily activities?

No.  Scentwork does not interfere with everyday activities or the current routine you have with your dog.
